Job Description
Job Purpose:
The Manufacturing Engineer must be a problem solver who is willing to tackle and follow through on complex and difficult design and manufacturing tasks. Will have hands-on experience in all phases of design and manufacturing processes, including product/process design validation, pre-production, production and post-production support. Works closely with other engineers, supervisors and team leads to fully support the VP of Technology.
Duties and Tasks:
• Design, install, or troubleshoot manufacturing equipment including CNC, or PLC based programmable equipment.
• Identify opportunities or implement changes to improve products or reduce costs using knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment, assembly methods, quality control standards, or product design, materials, and parts.
• Assist in the development, troubleshooting and improvement of manufacturing procedures in the pre-production and production environment to ensure specs are met according to original design and helmet requirements.
• Confer with vendors to determine component specifications and assist in the arranging of purchases of equipment, materials, parts, etc. when needed.
• Assist other departments in support of corporate objectives. This would include product development, providing engineering support for proposal submission(s), generation of product specifications, and/or creating and maintaining various helmet designs.
• Remains current on governmental standards and requirements in the development of helmets.
• Assists in the design processes to enhance company’s ability to manufacture ballistic helmets while maintaining national and international standards.
• Testing and validation of both new and existing designs.
• Evaluate and improve high precision machinery/mold design.
• Continuously researches current advancements within the ballistic helmet industry.
• Remains current on governmental standards and requirements in the development of helmets.
• Read and interpret product drawings to ensure product specification and tolerances are met.
• Equipment programming and setup for manufacturing to ensure product specifications are met, including cut tables, cold presses, hot presses, lasers, and sand blasters.
• Assists in creating, modifying, and revising manufacturing work instructions and process flow documentation.
• Be knowledgeable on the various defects and concerns that may be seen before and after each manufacturing operation.
• Identify scrap caused by equipment, troubleshoot equipment and adjust equipment as necessary.
• Assist with preventative maintenance and improvements on equipment as needed.
• Perform mechanical assembly and fabrication.
• Other duties as required by Management.
• Works with VP of Technology to define and manage projects in support of company objectives.
• Manages and executes projects associated with the design and development of ballistic helmet accessories, including such items as new retentions, pad systems, or rail technologies.
• Works to continually improve manufacturing processes, documents efforts thoroughly and transitions processes to Operations.
• Develop product blueprints and coordinate with Quality Manger on acceptable tolerances being ever watchful to keep product cost in check plus still supplying top quality products to our customers.
• Develop Work assist items to improve product quality and to maximize efficiency.
• Support operation of fabric cutters through design/adjustment of cut patterns, cut program deployment, and general production support in the use of the cutting machines.
• Support operation of laser cutting systems through design/adjustment of cut programs, cut program deployment, assistance with maintenance activities, and general production support in the use of the laser cutting systems.
• Other duties as required by Management.
Skills/Qualifications:
• Associates and /or BS, Mechanical, Chemical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent.
• Six Sigma Green Belt Certification preferred.
• 3 – 5 years of proven hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, experience with composite materials and processing methods preferred.
• Experience with CNC programming and operation.
• Experience with SolidWorks, GD&T, and CAD for 2D drawings.
• Familiarity with 3D scanning technologies and the evaluation/manipulation of scans to characterize or reverse engineer products is preferred.
• Self-motivated and driven.
• Strong organizational skills, able to coordinate multiple people and tasks.
• Critical attention to detail.
